. what did mitt romney do? he brought in paul ryan who has even less, if you could imagine that, foreign policy experience except maybe perhaps voting against tougher sanctions on iran while he was in congress. as far as that argument's concerned, i think it's rather debunked. i want to read to you very quickly a quote from mitt romney from that video with the 47%. this is his -- this is his foreign policy in a nutshell. so what do you do -- this is about peace in the middle east. you say you move things along the best way you can. you hope for some degree of stability. but you recognize this is an unsolved problem and we kick the ball down the field and hope ultimately somehow something will happen and resolve it. that's what mitt romney said on foreign policy behind closed doors. whatever he says today in a couple of hours, you got to juxtapose that to that quote in the video when he thought no one else was listening. >> john, one of mitt romney's problems is the only specifics he's given as to how his foreign policy differs from president obama is that he's going to talk tougher and s

as mitt romney. it's really on medicare especially, it's the ryan policies that obama is running against. and then lastly, i think what ryan and biden are defined by in a lot of ways and for biden, that's partially hit his gaffes. is he going to step in it? is there going to be some memorable sound bite from that debate? and ryan is known as the numbers guy. and the whole obama campaign now against romney and ryan is that the numbers on the republican side don't add up. so i think there's going to be pressure on ryan to explain the numbers or at least the obama folks are going to try and pressure ryan to explain the numbers. so these things usually don't matter. it's the undercard. but this time i think there could be a little more importance. >> i think you're exactly right. biden's actually a very good debater. he was very good during the democratic debates in '08. he beat barack obama every time. he is good in the debates, but boy, he can't afford to have an off night, can he? >> no. >> i mean, you talk about feeding into a narrative. i actually think paul ryan can break even and he'l

this thursday on the 11th you've got paul ryan and vice president joe biden. this is going to be very important for obama's effort to stave off romney. then on the 16th you got the second obama-romney debate. on the 22nd final obama-romney debate. then the last friday before the election one more jobs number. my own inclination the job numbers aren't quite as "game change"ing for debates as for the reason voters know how they feel about the economy. they don't need a government report. it does get a lot of attention and we got a race that's plainly at this point even though obama still has a slight advantage in the battleground states this race can go either way. >> interesting. then we got the governor, of course, speaking at vmi about foreign policy, an area for which a little while he appeared to want to take the campaign, at least before the debate. how ground moving is this? >> reporter: i don't think it's very ground moving. it's not what people will vote on. for romney it's an effort to press a leadership advantage which may be one of the things that move the numbers for him after the de
